Spring Mash-Ups Galore
Has spring got you in the mood for dancing? I thought so.
And what time is it? Yes, it's SPRING MASH-UPS GALORE time!!!
(Too many capitalisations, exclamation marks and not getting out of the house due to revision makes Jenna go insane in the membrane)
Here's your mash-up fix:
Santana ft Rob Thomas v Lady Gaga v Van Halen: Smooth Romance -Dan Mei/Marc Johnce:
(‘Smooth’, ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Jump’)
No. Friggin’. Way. That’s not possible.
Well it is, and hot hot hot it is. Grab your salsa shoes boi, we’re gonna dance until the Cuban sun rises. It works really well; the rhythm, the blend, the general sexiness of it all. Even the Van Halen section works. Go check it out. Now.
Blondie v Lily Allen: Fuck Blondie – DJ Clive$ter:
(‘Heart of Glass’ and ‘Fuck You’)
When I first heard this mash-up I couldn’t stop laughing. Perhaps it was the title of the mash-up, me being childish et al, but it was probably the transformation of ‘Heart of Glass’, a song which I’ve always associated with cool New York discotheques, to a poptastic and very cute record thanks to Miss Allen, oh yeah, and the DJ of course. Very much enjoyed it. Hope you do too.
And still on the Blondie theme (I’m sorry, I’m a little obsessed with her at the moment)…
Blondie v Muse: Call Me Uprising – CjR Mix:
(‘Call Me’ and ‘Uprising’)
‘Epic’ is the only word which is fit to describe this amazing mash-up. Marks awarded to how easily these two great songs are blended together, my favourite section of the mash-up being 2:10 – listen, you’ll see why. I’ve even gone so far in saying that the mash-up is better than the originals…
Kraftwerk v Wynter Gordon – DJ Schmolli:
(‘The Model’ and ‘Dirty Talk’)
Who would have thought it? A mash-up of BDSM-ridden lyrics and German electronic synthpop. The age we live in, huh? I really enjoyed this. A sinister mix if you compare it to the original ‘Dirty Talk’ produced by David Guetta.
Editors v R.E.M.: Papillon the One I love – Dan Mei:
(‘Papillon’ and ‘The One I Love’)
Unexpected, but totally works. Thanks to Dan Mei, the Editors have breathed new life into R.E.M.’s 20-year-old hit, transforming it into an indie-night anthem.
(Andy doesn’t agree that the Editors now sound like something from an 80s dystopian movie, but hey…we’re still debating on that one.)
Hot Chip v Genesis: I Can’t Stand’ – Marc Johnce:
(‘One Life Stand’ and ‘I Can’t Dance’)
Again, another clever mash-up – it has given me the opportunity to dance to Genesis without feeling one bit ashamed. Oh, and if you haven’t listened to Hot Chip’s new album, you’re missing out.
Right, one more mash-up to go…saving the best for last…
CjR Mix – Eye of the King Fu Street Groove:
You want 80s? I’ll give you the 80s, hand-delivered. In this mash-up, we have…
Break Machine – ‘Street Dance’
Madonna – ‘Into the Groove’
Carl Douglas – ‘Kung Fu Fighting’
Survivor – ‘Eye of the Tiger’
excerpts from the classic Bruce Lee movie - 'Enter the Dragon'
Absolutely a-ma-zing. Think Karate Kid. Think New Years Eve party, ushering in 1985. You’ll love it. I’ll even guarantee you’ll love it.
Ok, that’s enough mash-ups for Spring.

And that was 2009…
2010 looks bright and orange for music, however, its time to assess with a permanent red marker and my glasses on the tip of my nose, which albums made my top 10. So here it goes, or as dear Andy says, it goes something a little bit. Like. This…
The Antlers: Hospice:
‘Hospice’: a collection of songs about a person losing their loved one to cancer. Right…ok, not sold? Well, I dare you to listen to it. Go on. ‘Hospice’ is an incredibly beautiful, well-constructed album, with imagery-laden songs. There’s the dreamy, spacious, drifting ‘Shiva’, then there’s the charming, intricate-layering of ‘Two’. I don’t have anything bad to say about it. Peter Silberman’s sweet quivering voice alongside his poetic lyrics; possibly a little of Arcade Fire in the mix but I think that’s going to some lengths. For me, ‘Hospice’ is the best album of 2009. Now go forth and listen to it. I order you to. Here’s the music video to ‘Two’. Enjoy.
Temper Trap: Conditions:
Well you’ve probably guessed that ‘Sweet Disposition’ was 2009’s festival anthem, but the question is will Temper Trap be classed as a one-hit wonder and fade into the mists? Answer: no, I hope not, as their album reveals they have something ‘different’ which sets them apart from the bands of current trends. Does the album show off their uniqueness? I’m going to say no. With ‘Conditions’ you can clearly place the songs into two categories: ‘really good’ and ‘not very good’. What springs to mind is the pop-tastic Fader as compared to the erm repetitiveness of ‘brakes on brakes on’ (Science of Fear) – drones on a bit. Much potential, I did like the album, but I expect a lot more from Temper Trap in the foreseeable future.
Little Boots: Hands:
Little Boots ushered in a new wave of the electronic for 2009 which is likely to continue throughout 2010, inspiring many to go buy a stylophone and pretend to play it well but can only bash out Greensleeves and everyone gets pissed off with you because what you’re playing definitely does not sound like the riff from ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’… Hmmm…anyways, the album has definitely grown on me, especially with the catchy Eurovision-esque ‘Earthquake’ and ‘Ghost’, the Slyvia Plath-inspired ‘Mathematics’ and the lets all sing along to dancing is my remedy remedy oh! (‘Remedy’, in case you hadn’t guessed). Also, on another note, here is her and my Gary Numan perform together, covering ‘Venus in Furs’. A talented woman, and performer too (caught her at The Junction back in October – check out our Facebook fan page for amateur photos), 2010 shall be bright and shiny for Little Boots.
The Editors: In This Light And On The Evening:
And carrying on with this electronic theme takes me nicely to The Editors. Think Vangelis. Think dystopia. Think ‘The Running Man’. Much edgier and darker than their previous stuff, especially ‘Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool’. Catchy riffs see ‘In This Light And On The Evening’ and for big tune see ‘Papillon’. All in all, I very much like it.
Kasabian: West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum:
And the best album tongue twister goes to… I quite like the album, but there wasn’t much effort displayed to break out from the things they’re previously done: nothing ground-breaking, nothing earth-shattering, just another Kasabian album. Perhaps there was a glimmer of experimentation in ‘Vlad the Impaler’ (which has been played about a zillion times on SUGAR PILL (7pm, Mondays, www.cur1350.co.uk), but don’t hold your breath. Then why is this in my top 10? Honest reason? It was just an excuse to post the music video for Vlad, starring Noel Fielding. And here you go:
The Heavy: The House That Dirt Built:
Hot hot hot. The Heavy’s second album will really kick it off in 2010. It’s practically got everything in it: funk, indie, bit of Prince going on there, elements of jazz and contemporary R&B. Fantastic. Dirty and raw in ‘No Time’, the soulful ‘Short Change Hero’, ‘Love Like That’, a relic of the ska period, and the racy and edgy ‘Oh No! Not You Again!’. Absolutely superb. Go listen to them perform live on the BBC website.
Fever Ray: Fever Ray:
Fever Ray’s self-entitled album scored high on my barometer. Chilling, atmospheric and eerie, it’s actually quite hard to pinpoint their musical style. It’s like a mixture of electronic and Peruvian Panpipes CD as seen in ‘Coconut’. The lyrics are mystifying as heard in ‘Dry and Dusty’, but my all-time favourite lyric must be ‘we talk about love / we talk about dishwasher tablets’ from ‘Seven’. Go listen to it, I dares you. And, admittedly, when I first heard of Fever Ray I was more attracted by their album artwork than the music inside. Just look at it:
Muse: The Resistance:
Reviewing this album was going to be hard for me. ‘Blackholes and Revelations’ was one of the best albums of the past decade… so! What does this new album hold in store? Let’s blast you with some key words: epic space rock, conspiracy theories, Stanley Kubrick, secret organisations, Dr Who, mutually assured destruction and ELO. I think that’s a pretty accurate way to describe the album, although ‘I Belong To You’ doesn’t seem to follow the sci-fi trend. Verdict? Well it’s definitely grown on me, I think it takes a couple of listenings to appreciate it. For example, it took quite some time to get past that ‘oh they’ve just copied Queen’ in ‘United States of Eurasia’. But I’m still very much a ‘Blackholes and Revelations’ girl. To conclude, ‘The Resistance’ would be a perfect present for Mr L. Ron Hubbard. Here’s the catchiest song from the album:
Grizzy Bear: Veckatimest:
And the best album with the hardest pronounceable title goes to…Admittedly this is the first time I’ve heard any of Grizzly Bear’s music. I have heard of the band, they’ve been knocking about since 2004 – I came – I listened – I liked. The solemn ‘Foreground’, the infectious ‘Two Weeks’ (was it hijacked by The Independent for an advert?) and the sporadic rhythms of ‘While You Wait For The Others’ are easily my best songs of the album. Lots of different styles, textures, rhythms you name it.
Passion Pit: Manners:
‘Manners’ is just so delightfully happy – makes you want to throw everything in the air and dance around in circles and shout out the lyrics…not that I’ve done that to ‘Sleepyhead’. What else can I say? It’s just an incredibly gleeful album; MGMT-esque, but as if you were on some kind of hallucinogenic happy drug. Happy, happy, happiness as conveyed in ‘Eyes as Candles’ and ‘To Kingdom Come’. Happy.

Good. Clean. Men.
Monday's show saw it being hijacked by half the cast (but I wasn't complaining) of a new comedy sketch show in Cambridge called 'Good. Clean. Men.' They certainly were hilarious. They wore deodorant. And were 100% male. Mmmm.

Let's all read this Reading Review - innit.
Reading: second to Glastonbury. And SUGAR PILL sent festival virgin Jenna to investigate the phenomenon of music-worshippers gathering amongst the mud to adorn the kings and queens of indie.
I was a festival virgin, sacrificed to the crowds of Them Crooked Vultures. Someone chucked a watermelon at me. A watermelon. Not cans of drinks or cans of piss – a whole friggin’ watermelon. Apart from the melon incident, for a first-timer at this festival, it was an excellent experience - well except not showering for four days, having barbecue sauce thrown onto my tent in the night and God-forbidden toilets which were more like pits than anything or the time where I was drenched in piss at The Prodigy gig – it was all good fun. Thank God for wet wipes that’s all I’m saying. Enough about the hardships of moi, lets give you the music gossip.
Friday:
Friday’s mainstage during the day wasn’t my thing e.g. no thanks to Fall Out Boy, so it was off to the Radio 1 stage where I caught the last 15 minutes of Dananananaykoyd or however you spell the name. From the sound of it, they sounded tight and the crowds responded positively seeing as they were the first act on. Not much was happening so I checked out the Introducing Stage – look out for 60 Watt Bayonets - think English version of Beth Ditto. The lead singer certainly belted out songs for the 100-strong crowd, making our ears bleed in the process (but in a good way).
Hate me hate me hate me. I missed Friendly Fires (get their album, I advise you) – that was only because I wanted to get prime standing space for the headliners Kings of Leon. So after standing through Kaiser Chiefs (admittedly, were quite good, even though I don’t rate their music particularly great), it was time for the KoL. Interesting. Very interesting. I suppose you heard about their temper tantrum and swearing to the crowds? As I gather, what sparked their rage was people who had only come to see ‘Sex on Fire’ be played and felt the audience weren’t familiar with their older works (which are much better than the rubbish off ‘Only By The Night.’) So they were going to have a frosty reception to, say, ‘Red Morning Light’ and ‘My Party’ purely because the crowd didn’t know them. It was the same where I was standing; no-one knew their older music. I can sympathise with KoL, but didn’t really appreciate being sworn at…or their refusal to my demands for an encore. But I still love them, ‘Because Of The Times’ being my favourite. So I trudged back to my barbecue-sauce-covered tent, stopping to huddle around a fire with drunks and stoners. A good night in my books.
Saturday:
After getting lost coming back from the toilets (pits) in the early morn, I sat down and planned who I wanted to see that day. The line-up during the day didn’t really interest me as it was mainly crap rock like Fightstar. First on the agenda was Eagles of Death Metal. I was very impressed by them actually, having practically no familiarity with their music. They were a parody and their set was very entertaining. I enjoyed them immensely with a snorter to the left of me, stoner on the right. Patrick Wolf time soon followed. Again, I was impressed, especially with Patrick dancing around the stage and climbing up it. Masses of energy and masses of costume changes = full marks. Surprise act was Them Crooked Vultures. I survived two of their songs (which were pretty awesome) and was literally smuggled out of the crowd before I died. Would have liked to have stuck around for longer but in fear of my life I fled to the bar. Sorry.
Reunited with my friends, it was about time to sit quietly and enjoy the music of Ian Brown. I have a soft spot for him, especially during his times with The Stone Roses. Quite chilling listening to him, enjoyed his set, and did play a couple of Stone Roses songs, and the crowds (mainly middle-agers) were transported back to their Hacienda days. But the highlight of that day, I have to say, is the almighty Prodigy later on that evening. The crowd just erupted when hearing a few bars of the opening of their songs. Absolutely amazing – the only complaint I had was the quality of sound. But I had other things to complain about. Like having piss poured on me. Up next was the Arctic Monkeys – that was strange in the line-up because I would have thought The Prodigy would have been better to close Saturday. But there you go. Hmm the Monkeys. For me, they were the most disappointing of the bands. Their setlist was not the most creative and there were a lot of dips – at one point it was as if they were deliberately trying to make the crowd go to sleep. Their encore was poor – I don’t remember the songs, I think 505 was played but I was so tired at that point I wasn’t concentrating. They did play a lot of their third album songs, but from the sound of it I don’t think I’ll bother reviewing it. Sorry.
Sunday:
Sunday saw much of me trying to get primetime standing for Radiohead for later on that day. The results were unsuccessful and I’ll tell why in a mo. Got there when Vampire Weekend was playing. I really enjoyed their set and the crowd were treated to their new material – looking forward to that next year. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs came on – and that’s when the crowds got mad. Too mad. Crushing mad. Unfortunately I was being crushed to a size 0 so much that I couldn’t concentrate on the set – I was concentrating too much on holding onto my friend (if anything gave, I think I would have died.) So I survived the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but knew I wouldn’t be able to for Bloc Party. I watched them from a safer distance. Alas alas alas what ever happened to Bloc Party? It’s like they’re trying to branch out to cheap House music complete with lasers. Their set was awkward, due Kele’s keep-stopping-telling-a-no
So I waited patiently for my beloved Radiohead to come on. And I wasn’t disappointed. Not one ounce. They were…how can I describe it? Perfect. Perfect is the correct word and the amount I paid for my ticket I would have happily paid to just see Radiohead. They opened up with ‘Creep,’ attracting all the populists (the same ones who demanded ‘Sex on Fire’ to be played) and then switched to songs from their most recent works of ‘In Rainbows,’ thus driving the populists out like snakes. I wished I had a photograph of my face when I saw people leave. It would have surely been smug. And the smugness grew when I overhead a 40 year-old lager-lout football hooligan shout ‘Radiohead? Who the f**k?’
Their set was beautiful. ‘Reckoner’ was my favourite of the gig – I think I may have been a little teary-eyed at that moment (sorry to share that sentimental thought with you but it had to be said. They’re amazing. Get over it.)
After being satisfied by Radiohead, I walked back to my tent when the carnage began. Reading had a slight burning taste to the air, after seeing tents ablaze and gas canisters thrown into the air like missiles. It was post-apocalyptic anarchy where teenagers ruled the earth – like that Star Trek episode. Poles were brought down, angry stampedes followed, and my head missed a garden chair by inches. And that concludes my Reading review, having put more effort into this than any of my law essays in the past year. Brilliant.
And so Reading came to an end. I enjoyed myself, and have even bought my ticket for next year where I hope to the Music God Muse will be playing.
